At Kenny and Amanda's, enjoying the birthday cake they got for me! Then they announced they wanted to take us to see Ice Age 2. Could Ava be more excited?
How many Barnes' does it take to strap a kid in a carseat??
Ava does not like to be distracted during a movie. She gets this from her parents.
Snowcones after the movie.
Once home, Amanda gave Ava a bubble bath while I read in my room. Apparantly Ava's tales got taller as the night went on. Amanda told me later that Ava said the devil gets into her heart and makes her do bad things her mommy doesn't want her to do! She also said the devil tries to pull her under the ground when she's outside and she has to kick her legs to get free!
And then ghost stories. . . "did you hear the one about the woman with one arm?" Ava also told about "old man Curvy" (really it's old man Kirby) who haunts Barton Bible Camp.
The next day Kenny played golf and Amanda went with friends to see "Wicked." So Ava and I had a "mommy/daughter day" as she calls it. (she also has "daddy/daughter days" with Trey) I decided to take her to Shogun's to experience my favorite food. As you can see, she was impressed. (I have a picture of Trey on our honeymoon making that exact face at his plate.) I ordered her california rolls, and her favorite, shrimp.
After lunch we visited Mr. Marvin and Mrs. Veta, some close friends of my grandparents. Mr. Marvin got out his old movie projector and we watched movies of my Richmond grandparents, mom and her siblings in the 50's. One clip was of them going to church services when they lived on Long Island. It amazes me how neat, tidy and well dressed families appeared in previous decades. My mom and her three siblings were impeccably dressed. No one had on crocs. My grandmother had on a beautiful yellow suit and a hat covered with artificial daisies. She looked so classy! And not just then, but in every photograph I've ever seen of her. How in the world she did it with 4 children I'll never know. I'm sure she got up a few hours earlier than I do!
As we were driving away Ava started whining, "but Mommy we didn't ride in the boat." Long story short, I told her I never said that and where in the world did she get that idea. She got really upset and insisted I said we were going on a boat ride. I argued back, getting madder by the minute, that I did not say that. In my head I was reassuring myself I never said that, nobody I know even has a boat in Fayetteville. She was adament and was crying at this point and I was totally baffled and upset that "mommy/daughter day" was getting spoiled. About 5 minutes later it hit me, we had just visited Mr. and Mrs. Boatright. That whole time she thought I said boat ride! Of course I felt terrible and apologized and she forgot all about it. You really have to watch what you say to kids because they'll hold you to it every time!
Then we went to Tara's to drop off Ava and go to the shower. Jacob graciously agreed to watch Ava along with his two kids for the evening. I thoroughly enjoyed my "girls' night out!" Their kids are two and a half year old Canaan and 6 month old Hayden. Jacob told me he observed Canaan and Ava watching a movie and Ava tried to put her arm around Canaan but he would have none of it. He kept scooting away from her and told his dad "that girl" was trying to hug him!
At Bonnie's I had a wonderful time catching up with friends. It was like I'd never left. Bonnie has a beautiful house kind of in the country, with a gorgeous view of the hills. The food was delicious. Little Caroline enjoyed being the center of attention opening her gifts. She is so cute and smart and was quite the little hostess!! She was very eager to give me a tour of her room and baby Thomas' too.
Caroline in the middle of all the presents!

At Mt. Comfort Church of Christ, Ava and Caroline became "best friends."
